How to Reach?
Vayalur or Kumara vayalur belongs in Tiruchirapalli district. The nearest railway station and airport is in Tiruchirapalli. From Trichy, Buses and Cabs are available to Vayalur. Vayalur is around half an hour ride from Railway station. Airport is little more distant. Autos are also available. Airport taxi is also available.
About the temple
Kumar vayalur or Vayalur is currently famous for Lord Murugan. The temple is centuries old. It was discovered by the king ruling at that time and built by king. The temple houses shrines mainly for Lord Subramaniar with Valli and Dheivanai, poiya Ganapathy, Lord Shiva and his consort parvati. There are flower shops right near the entrance of the temple. The temple tank or pushkarani is called as Thadagam as it was carved by Lord Subramaniar's weapon called Vel(வேல்). The Tamil poet Arunagirinathar sang part of the famous thirupughazh hymns in this temple. People generally crowd this temple on the days when The Star Krithigai comes or on Tuesdays. The temple is generally closed in the afternoon after noon time worship except on krithigai, on which day the temple is open full time. People visit the temple for seeking mercy of the god to cure diseases. Usually people would come on monday to worship the god on tuesday. Young people at the age of getting married, visit this temple to pray specially for getting married.
History
Once long ago, Lord Shiva was under the earth in this place. Very dense sugarcane forest were grown in this place. Seeing the sugarcane, the king craved to eat it and went to cut it. As he gradually cleared many trees, he came to the sugarcane tree grown directly above Lord Shiva. The moment he cut that sugarcane, blood oozed out of the bark of the tree. The king was shocked and became sad on seeing the bleeding sugarcane tree. That night, in his dream, Lord Shiva tells him all about the sugarcane tree and asks him to build a temple. On learning about the presence of the Lord under the tree, the king happily builds the temple at Vayalur. Hence Kumara-Vayalur temple was built.
Story of Arunagirinathar
The famous poet Arunagirinathar visited this temple. Being an Ardent devotee of kumaraswamy, Arunagirinathar went to his shrine, situated directly behind Lord Shiva's shrine. After praying for some time, Subramaniaswamy asks him to bathe in the temple pond called Thadakam next morning and come to see him again. Arunagirinathar does as instructed and arrives next morning at Lord Subramaniaswamy's shrine. He sits down in front of the god. Lord Murugan asks him to open his mouth and show his tongue. Arunagirinathar does as instructed. Lord murugan writes Om, the pranava manthiram, on his tongue. As soon as it happens, the poet Arunagirinathar starts to sing Thirupugazh, "Muthai thiru" mentioning his mother's name "muttha" as the beginning. to confirm that only truth is being said, Lord Poiya Ganapathi is present near the shrine of Lord Subramaniaswamy. After singing here, Arunagirinathar goes to Viralimalai and acquires Ashtama siddhi from Lord Murugan in Vialimalai.
