Though, you should be ready to climb at least 100 steps to reach the first temple, Thayumanaswamy temple. On the climb, you could see people carrying vaazhai thaar(clusters of plantain fruit on a stalk just like how it grows on plantain tree). This vaazhai thaar is offered to Thaayumana swamy. After offering, they are distributed in the temple. The prime deities Mattuvaar kuzhal ammai and Thayumanaswamy are in two floors in the temple. Even if it is hot outside, it will be cool inside the temple here. The god here is known for showering motherly love on his devotee. Hence he is called Thaayum aanavar, meaning He who became a mother also. The Goddess is called mattuvar kuzhal ammai because her hair smells divinely fragrant. There are other shrines also in this temple. Durga devi is on the left side of Swamy and Dhakshinamoorthy is on the right side. A seperate temple for Nandi is located straight down the hill, opposite to Shiva, very near to temple tank. The nandi is so huge. A shrine for Anjaneya swamy is also present in the temple along with  Nandi. During Dusherra, idols for celebrating golu is sold in the super big Nandi temple. History

Worship with sevvandhi flowers
In India, people worship god everyday. Some people do it with flowers of their favourite kind. The people not only worship everyday but also worship at a particular time. For such people, such worship gives abundant happiness. Their heart will become light on all other aspects of life. Slowly they will detach themselves from worldly pleasures and become enlightened.

There was one such Sarama Munivar near Thayumanaswamy. He loved Lord shiva so much that he went to heaven and got Sevvandhi flower seeds from there to earth. He grew the flowers in an exclusive garden for his dear Lord Shiva. Everyday in the morning, he would collect the flowers himself from the garden and prepare a garland with those fresh flowers and worship Lord Shiva with it. He took this task so dearly to him, that it gave him immense happiness and bliss. His worship with the flowers became so dear to him and the lord, that the god was called Sevvandhinadhar also.

Every good people encounters a bad time, jealousy, corruption or sometimes theft. In Sarama Munivar's happy worship also one such incident happened. The garden, in which he exclusively grew sevvandhi flowers bloomed vigorously. The blooms attracted everyone's eye for an appreciation. While good people appreciated it, one flower vendor passing by decided to steal the flowers. He made a garland out of it and gifted those flowers to the king. The Sarama Munivar did not know that the flowers were stolen initially. One day he noticed that the flower count has reduced very much but the buds were in a good number. He should have a fair bloom everyday. So, with the patience and wise mind he had, he decided to hide and see what is happening to the flowers. While he was hidden, the boy came to steal the flowers and started stealing. Seeing the thief, Sarama Munivar caught the thief red handed. He took him to the King's court and made his complain to the king but to his surprise, the king not only refused to punish the thief but also turned insensitive to Sarama Munivar. The poor devotee became heart broken. He had only one person in his mind to pour out the sadness in his heart. He went to Sevvandhinadhar and told him what had happened. Lord Shiva saw the sadness in his devotee. He was angered by the injustice rule of the king and he turned to sit facing west from the east. His change resulted in the city being rained upon by sand instead of water. The king realised his mistake and all the people pleaded vekkaliamman to stop the sand rain. She prayed to Lord Shiva to stop the rain and even till today she does not have a roof for her in the temple.

This story not only tells us the happiness a devotee gets by worshiping but also how important a devotee becomes to his god. So, never lose faith in your worship to god.

God in the form of mother
Very long ago, a devotee named Ratnavathi, worshipped Shiva. She was married to Dana Guptan. It is a custom in Tamil Nadu, even today, for a woman to deliver the first child in the care of her mother. So when the daughter gets conceived, she will go to her mother few months before the due date. So, Rathnavathi also went to her mother. Rathnavathi's mother lived on one side of Kaveri river while Rathnavathi's house was on the other side. Even if  she moved to her mother's house, she came to worship Sevvandhinadhar everyday. On her due date, after she crossed the river, she went to worship her god. Meanwhile, the water level increased above the danger level in the Kaveri river. When Rathnavathi returned from the temple, she was devastated to see the flood in the river. The boats were no longer allowed to take passengers or cross the river. The people stopped her from crossing the river after seeing her condition. Helpless and devastated, Rathnavathi goes back to her house. Her mother, on the other bank of the river could not cross the river. She is also heartbroken that she could not be with her daughter at the delivery time. So she prays to help her daughter. Meanwhile, Rathnavathi enter into labor pain. At that time, her mother comes to her house with medicine and a doctor. Her mother takes care of her through the child birth and afterwards, takes care of the baby also. The flood started to recede after a few days and her real mother comes from the other side of the river. All this time, god in the form of Rathnavathi's mother cooks and feed her, bathe her child, give post delivery medicines to Rathnavathi and takes a very good care of her. When the real mother entered the house, she sees god in her form. The daughter looks from her mother to god and god to mother, very astonished. In the end, god decides to reveal his true self and gives darshan as Lord Shiva to both the mother and the daughter. Both of them are dumbfounded and surprised with the love god has showered on Rathnavathi. Hence, from then on, Sevvandhinaadhar is Known as Thayum aanavar(Tamil) or Maathru bootheswarar(Sanskrit).

That's all folks for today. I will see you all soon with another interesting pilgrim.

History

Ambalpuri
When Saraswathi mata came to earth to do penance, she chose koothanoor. This place is not only beautiful but also peaceful. As Saraswati ambal chose this place, it is also known as ambalpuri.

Ottakoothar
koothar is a devotee of Saraswathi ambal and famous poet.  Once, 1000 people were unceremoniously beheaded. Looking at the disgusting act, Koothar prayed to mother Saraswati and stuck back the heads of all 1000 people to their body. The song he sang is titled “ezhupezhupathu”. After this incident, he was known as ottakoothar. Since the king gave this land as a present to ottakoothar, it came to be known as koothanoor.
Once Otta koothar had to hide in kaali amman temple to escape a violent gang. The gang asked him to sing Barani song to let him free. At that time, Koothar sang the barani song with the help of Saraswathi ambal sitting in his tongue and to let the world know it is true, he has sung a song on Saraswathi mata with the line “Aattrangarai Sorkizhatthi vaazhiya”. Ottakoothar was a staunch devotee of Maha Saraswathi devi. He created Poonthottam(flower garden) near koothanoor. Now the town where poonthottam was created is called Poonthottam.

Story of Purushothaman

There was a person called Sarangapani deekshitar. His son is Purushothaman. Purushothaman was dumb by birth. His father was very depressed because of this reason and was very much confused by what he could do? Finally, he heard about Ambalpuri  place and also about Mahasaraswati. So, he sent purushothaman to Ambalpuri to do penance. Purushothaman took his father’s words to heart and came to ambalpuri. He took bath in Harisolmanadhi river every day and did severe penance. Saraswati mata, looked at her child doing penance and came to him on Vijayadasami day. Realizing that Saraswathi devi herself had come, Purushothaman worshipped at her feet. Then Saraswati mata gave the betel leaf she chewed on to him and made him a great poet. From that day onwards, he was called Purushothama Barathi. Purushothama Barathi was very happy that he performed Kumbabishegam to the Koothanoor Sarawathi devi temple.

History

Penance of the sage Gunaseelar
Very long ago, student of sage Thalpiya, Gunaseelar learnt Vedhas and Puranams from his teacher in the ashram situated in the forest of Neelivanam. Once Thalpiyar along with his disciples, went on a pilgrim to Himalayas. In Himalayas, he took darshan of the great sage Vyasa. He then took bath in holy rivers like Ganga. On the way back to his ashram, he went up the great Tirumala hills and went to Tirupati temple to have Darshan of lord Venkatachalapathy. In Tirupati, Gunaseelar also had darshan of god but soon he was mesmerized by the beauty of lord Venkatachalapathy. The longer he had darshan, heavier his heart felt to leave the god. He could not leave the temple or move away from having darshan of god. So he asked Lord Venkatachalapathy to come to his ashram but Lord Venkatachalapathy told him that he had taken a decision to stay in Tirupati until the world ends. He also tells him to do penance, as a result of which he will come to Gunaseelam and stay there. He also tells him to learn the way of doing the penance from his Guru Thalpiyar.

Gunaseelar conveyed the reply of lord Ventachalapathy to his teacher and his teacher also told him the ways. He also said that "Lord Venkatachalapathy is going to arrive at Gunaseelam as result of your penance and stay there with the name prassanna venkatachalapathy until the end of the world. So, go to your ashram and do the penance!".

Hearing this from his Guru Thalpiyar, Gunaseelar took leave from his teacher and came to his ashram situated on the banks of river Kaveri with lots of excitement. There he took bath in river Kaveri and started his penance, concentrating his mind on lord Venkatachalapathy.

Gunaseelar did his penance severely. He stood among five heaps of fire in summer, with wet clothes in winter and by standing in water in rainy season. By seeing his penance the devas got fear of their position in Devalokha. The leader of Devas, Indran got fear of losing his position and tried to disturb Gunaseelar with rain, lightning, thunder, wind and all other possible means but Gunaseelar did not even mind any of these distractions. He was completely unaware of the disturbances. Unable to destroy the penance of Gunaseelar, Indran and all Devas went to Brahma. Brahma seeing through his Gnana power told them that Gunaseelar is not trying to claim the position of Indra and Gunaseelar is doing penance only to bring lord Venkatachalapathy to his ashram. Hearing this, all Devas left happily.

In a far away place near Viraja river, In Vaikundam, where Vimanam that is thousand times brighter like Sun and walls that are adorned with precious stones, sage Sanaka and Narada sings praise of Lord Vasudevan as the lord is seated along with his consort Sridevi and Bhumidevi. From Vaikunda, Lord Vasudevan decides to go along with Sridevi on Garuda Vahanam by crossing the Maha meru mountain, Himalayas and Vindhyas towards the beautiful  ashram of Gunaseelar, situated on the banks of Kaveri, where Gunaseelar is doing penance thinking only about Vasudevan.

Knowing the arrival of Lord Vasudevan at Gunaseelar's ashram, Brahma is present along with his consort saraswathi on his Anna(Swan) vahanam, Lord Shiva is present along with his consort Parvati on Rishbha vahanam and all the Devas, Sages, gandharvas, Yakshas and Thalpiyar along with his disciples were also eagerly present.

As Vasudevan arrived at Gunaseelam along with his consort Sreedevi on Garuda vahanam, Gunaseelar came out of his penance and prostrated to lord Vasudevan and Sreedevi, looking like thousand suns, set atop the maha meru. Knowing that he cannot see this kind of happening in any other births, Gunaseelar stood there with tears in his eyes and goosebumps all over his body.  Lord Prassanna Venkatesa perumal looking strikingly beautiful, from the feet adorned with anklets upto the beautiful crown adorned with precious gems, looked at Gunaseelar, who was looking back at him and told him to ask for a boon that he wishes. Hearing this, Gunaseelar said that other than worshiping the lord himself, he does not want anything but for the wellness of people dwelling on earth, the Lord should stay at Gunaseelam till the end of world and grant the wishes of devotees . The lord also granted the boon and decided to stay at Gunaseelam until the end of world.

Discovering the temple
Sage Gunaseelar did all the pooja and worshiped the god everyday in Krutha yuga,Thretha yuga and Dwapara yuga. At the end of Dwapara yuga, he received an invitation from his Guru Thalpiyar to Theerthachakra yagam, happening in Naimisaranyam. Torn between his wish to not leave his beloved god and to attend the yagam, he told his situation to god Prassanna Venkatachalapathy. The god asks him to go with his guru to Theerthachakra yagam. Taking leave from god, Gunaseelar assigned one of his Students to perform pooja and went with his guru to Naimisaranyam. The disciple performs pooja everyday without any limitations. Situated near to Cauvery river, flood and wild animals problems inhibited the area. After Gunaseelar left, this problem pitched high leaving the Disciple, selected by Gunaseelar, to run away. Many years pass after the incident. Ants build anthill, covering the god with it. The place undergo lots of changes and finally turn into dense grass land.

King Gnanavarman of Chola Dynasty rule with his capital at Nisulapuri, Currently known as Uraiyur in Trichy. His royal cows were put very near to Gunaseelam at Badhra Chakram, currently known as Kallur. The cow herd and milkmaids would take the cows to graze the dense grassland at Gunaseelam. They milk the cows there and take rest for some time. Later they take the milk to palace at Uraiyur.

One time, the pots filled with milk, lost all of its content magically. The milkmaids were worried and discussed what they would tell the king. At that time, one elderly milkmaid got spiritual powers and said," I am Pressanna Venkatesan. I have been living in this anthill for very long time. Go to your king and tell that". Hearing this, the milkmaids reported the incident to King Gnanavarman.

On hearing that, Lord Prassanna Venkatesa perumal has manifested in his kingdom, he orders to journey towards Gunaseelam, along with his guards and soldiers. When he was close to the Anthill, a brahmin walked to him and said,"Dissolve this anthill completely with milk". After saying this, the brahmin disappeared. The king Gnanavarman considered this as a message from god himself. He ordered to bring thousands of tonnes of milk. All the milk maids in the kingdom brought thousands of tonnes of milk by milking cows. The king dissolved the anthill completely using the milk brought by milkmaids.

The king was surprised to see Sri Prassanna Venkatesa Perumal and stood with goosebumps all over him. He could only say the names of god MahaVishnu, "Vasudeva", "Pradyumna", "Sangarshana", "Aniruddha" and so on. The lord replied, "I am very happy annd proud of your Devotion. To fulfill Gunaseela maharishi's Penance, I have decided to stay in Gunaseelam until the world ends. I should be worshiped according to the Vaikanasa agama, specified by Vaikanasa maharishi. Any devotee, who come to my shrine and worship me will get spouse if he pray for a spouse, will get child if he pray for a child, will get money if he pray for money and will get well if he have sickness. People praying me will never get worried. You should worship me everyday by staying at Badrachakram, ruled by your ancestors. You should specially worship me alone on Saturdays. You should develop Badhrachakram village".

The king wanted to build a grand temple with very good architecture works in it but the god asked him to build a very simple temple as people would want to build extend the temple and I want to grant them the good karma. So Gnanavarman built a simple yet a beautiful temple for God and with Vaikanasars(People who worship god after learning Vaikasa agamam are called Vaikanasar) he performed Mahasamprokshanam and gave them gold and jems and recieved their good wishes. He made preparations to perform pooja and worship according to Vaikanasa agamam.

He developed Badrachakram and built a palace there. From there he daily worshiped god Prassanna Venkatesan. He came specially on saturdays alone. From history it is believed on those days, the god spoke to king and other people related to kingdom and to fulfill the wishes of People. Many Devotees during the reign of Gnanavarman got their wishes fulfilled like Sruthavarman got eyesight, devotees getting back to normal mental state, Couple granted child and many more. According to rules, the devotees stayed at Gunaseelam, bathed in Kaveri river and worshiped Prassanna Venkatesa Perumal and got their wishes fulfilled.

Markandeyan gets rid of fear of death
Once long ago, a couple lived happily but did not have a child. As they craved for a child, they worshiped lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed them and asked if they want a child who would live for 100 years and be a fool or a child who would live for just 16 years and be extremely intelligent. The couple decided they want the child who is intelligent and God Shiva blessed them with an intelligent child. The parents named their child Markandeyan. As a child, Markandeyan decided to get rid of fear of death. He came to Koviladi and worshipped Ranganathaswamy to get rid of fear. The god blessed him and Markandeyan lived happily.

Upari vasu and pot full of 1000 appams
Upari vasu was a king in koviladi. Everyday he served food to 100 brahmans. As Upari vasu's service continued, Lord Ranganatha came to Upari vasu dressed as a brahman. Upari vasu greeted him and served him food. To Upari vasu's delight and surprise, Lord Ranganatha ate all the food cooked for 100 people still dressed as brahman. Upari vasu humbly enquired if he needed any more items. Lord Ranganatha looked at him and said "Why do you always give rice varieties? Prepare 1000 sweet appams for me!". Upari vasu affirmed that he would prepare 1000 sweet appams by dusk and give it to Lord Ranganatha still dressed as brahman. Upari vasu fulfilled his promise by giving 1000 appams in a pot to Lord Ranganathar. The temple offers a very peaceful and happy atmosphere. The main goddess of the temple is Sharadhambal, a form of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. People bring their little children to temple and initiate first lines of study here. The temple is ideal for meditating and so are the gardens and its surroundings. The temple lies on one side of river Tunga. On the other side is the mutt. A bridge connects both the ends. The mutt was established by Adhi Sankarar, who also established four other main mutts at Puri, Badhrinath, Dwarka and kanchipuram.

Sringeri is very famous for the marvellous architecture of Vidhyashankar temple, right beside the main Sharadhambal temple. The temple’s construction is so marvellous that the temple is one of the heritage sites in India.

History
Once sage Duruvasa went to Sathyalokha to worship Goddess Saraswati and Brahma. The recited sloka to please the gods. As he was reciting, he made a small mistake, which goddess saraswati noticed and very small smile flowered in her face. Enraged by the smile, Duruvasa cursed Saraswati that she would be born in Bhulokha and would be married to Brahma, who in turn will get sanyasa. God could have easily refused the curse but to lay a strong foundation of dharma in the world, Saraswati decides to take birth as Ubhaya Bharathi in a brahmin family. She is married to Mandana Misrar, a vedic scholar. Adi shankara visits Mandana misrar's house, after hearing about his vedic knowledge and disciplined life. The day Adi shankarar visits happens to be the shraddha day of Mandana misrar's parent. Seeing the great ascetic, Mandana misrar tells he has to perform ceremony at his house, for which Adi shankarar respond. Seeing the intellect of Adi shankara, the guests urge Mandana mishrar to invite him for the Vishnu bhojan. Adi sankarar politely refuses saying he is hungry for a verbal competition with the scholar. Satisfied with the request, Mandana mishrar agrees and sets the day for argument. Adi sankarar seeing Ubhaya Bharathi's high intellect and requests her to be the judge. On the day of the competition, Ubhaya Bharathi gives flower garlands to both Adi sankarar and Mandana mishrar. She sets the condition that whose flower garland fades first would be runner and the other would be winner. Mandana mishrar seeing the ascetic put a condition that if Adi sankarar loses, he have to marry and lead a life with family. Adi sankarar agrees with the condition that if he wins, Mandana mishrar should get sanyasa and become his disciple. The strong verbal arguement began. In between the arguement, Mandana misrar realise that Adi sankarar has no knowledge of kama and challenges him. Seeing the situation, Adi sankarar requests Ubhaya bharathi to give him some time to research on the topic. Ubhaya bharati agrees after seeing that it would be unjustifiable to not give adi sankarar the permission. Adi Sankarar takes his three disciples and goes to a safe place. After instructing his disciples, his soul leaves his body and enters the body of the king, who had passed away on that day. The disciples guard Adi sankarar's body not allowing anyone near the place. The queen notices the change in king's attittude and intellect. It took her little time to realize that Adi sankarar is in king's body. Queen is intrigued by the questions from the king about kama and learns about the debate taking place in Mandana mishrar's household. Seeing the happiness among the people and wanting to preserve it, queen orders few servants to find and burn Adi sankarar's body. Adi sankarar learns about the queen's plan immediately and realizes it is time to go back to his own shell. As queen's plan was about to take place, Adi sankarar enters into his own body and leaves the safe place along with his disciples. He comes back and the arguement continues. Mandana misrar's garland began to fade and he accepted his defeat and accepts sanyasam. Adi Sankara has never before went in search of a disciple. He was the first and He was given the title Sureshwaracharya. Ubhaya bharathi realize that it is lord shiva, who has come in the form of Adi sankarar. She requests to leave from bhulokha but Adi sankarar pursue her to come along with him to establish his matt. Ubhaya bharathi agrees. When they reach Sringeri, they witness a beautiful scene where a big snake protects a frog, which about to give birth to its offspring, from rain. Seeing that the greatest enemies are living in harmony, Sankarar is mesmerized. He requests ubhaya bharathi (saraswathi mata) to stay there as sharadhambal. Gladly, Ubhaya bharathi stays in Sringeri as Sharadhambal. Adi sankarar establishes a mutt in Sringeri and leaves Suresvaracharaya as the Guru of the mutt.

Adi Shankarar once visited kailash, abode of lord Shiva. When he visited, Lord shiva presented him 5 Shiva lingas. The five lingas are present even today. One of them is at Sringeri mutt. The devotees can see Shankaracharya guru performing pooja to the lingam in the evening time. This pooja is called Chandramouleeswara pooja.

History
Once upon a time, bamboo trees were grown in the place, the temple is built in. Everyday a milk man would pass through this way and everyday one of the milk cans will be hit by one bamboo tree. The King questioned the milk man about the reduced quantity of milk. The milk man revealed that one of the bamboo trees will hit one of his milk cans. Hearing this, the king ordered the bamboo tree to be cut down. So, people went there to cut it. On cutting it, blood burst out from the bamboo tree.  Realizing that The bamboo tree is not any other ordinary tree, king started to build a temple. The temple is built by Pandian kings for three generations. Since the god appeared in the form of bamboo forest, he was known as Venu vana nathar. Initially Gandhimathi amman temple was separate from Nelliappar swamy temple. The sangili mandapam was built to connect both the temples.

After the temple was buillt, people worshipped the god. As a part of worship, food is offered to god. One pandithar would cook the food specially. The pandithar would soak and wash the grains. After washing the grains, he would spread the grains under the sun for drying. later he would separate rice from its skin(நெல்). Then the rice will be cooked and used for worshiping god. One day, the pandithar lay the grains under the sun for drying and went to river Tamirabarani for bathing. At the time, rain started pouring. Realizing that grains were laid outside, the pandithar ran back to save the grains from getting wet. If the grains got wet, then preparing food for worshiping would not happen that day. When the pandithar got back to the grains laid down on the ground under the sun, he was surprised to the core when none of the grain was wet but the area surrounding the grains was wet. From then on the city is known as Thirunelveli and the god as Nellaiappar.

History of the Temple

Histories would be the right word here. Lord here is such that, many incidents has become History that makes people surprised. Let us see all the histories associated with this temple.

Elephant and the Spider
An elephant and spider worshipped the lord here. The elephant would come in the morning, bathe the lord with fresh water and worship. Spider will come later in mid-day and make web to provide god with shelter. Every morning, elephant would look at the web and clean it and everyday, the spider would spin web tirelessly. To know who spins web, elephant decides to look for the source and on the same day, spider wanted to know who destroys the shelter it has created for god. A big fight break out between the elephant and spider. Spider decides and enters elephant's trunk. Spider being venomous, stings the elephant and elephant squeeze its trunk bringing death to both. Since the spider showed the tendency to poison and kill, it did not attain moksha. Elephant attains moksha. The spider from the benefit of worshiping lord everyday, takes birth as a red eyed king. He is born red eyed because few hours before labour, an astrologer informs the mother after looking at the positions of celestial bodies that if the baby's birth is little delayed, it will become a ruler. So the to-be mother in labour hangs herself upside down. The baby born at the perfect time becomes the king named Kochengannan meaning red eyed king. He is the king, who built this temple. From the effect of previous birth, he built the shrine for Lord Jambukeswarar such that no elephant could enter inside. The temple is known as Thiru Aanai Kaa meaning "The place where elephant is protected". With time, the pronunciation changed to Thiruvanaika.

Jalagandeswarar
Goddess Parvathi appeared here as Akilandeswari. Everyday goddess worshipped Lord Shiva by going to river and carving a lingam out of water. Pleased with her worship, Lord Shiva appeared as Jalagandeswarar and bless Akilandeswari. Goddess gets upanyasam(lessons) from The Lord. So, lord Jalagandeswarar is guru(teacher) and Goddess Akilandeswari is student. There is no marriage festival organised in the temple because of this reason. However, people who seek to get married soon, worship the goddess by offering a very long Garland called nila maalai(நில மாலை).

AadhiSankarar
The famous saint Aadhi Sankarar visited the temple. At the time he visited, goddess Akilandeswari brimmed with so much power that no one could enter the temple easily. Seeing the situation, saint Aadhi Sankarar made a pair of earrings. He adorned the goddess with the earrings and after that people worshipped the goddess with ease.

Jambukeswarar
One Devotee worshipped Lord Shiva(Jalagandeswarar). One day he offered white jambu fruit to lord Shiva. After eating the fruit, lord Shiva gave its seed to the saint. Considering the seed as a prasadham (food offered to god), he swallows it. A white jambu tree grows from inside the saint and comes out from his head. Unable to bear this, he pleadingly looks at Shiva. Lord Shiva console him by saying, he would be under this tree and from then would be called Jambukeswarar. The saint known as jambu munivar is satisfied by this and attains moksham(salvation).

Vibhoothi Siddhar
When the temple's four praharam construction was completed, the king wanted to build the fifth praharam(A path around the temple). For this, construction of the big fort had to be done. The king was facing war threats from a nearby kingdom and did not announce his plan. The king went to sleep worried about the plan. In his dream, lord Shiva asks him to work on his plan and he would be helped by lord Shiva himself. The construction of the fort commences and when it is over, a saint named Vibhoothi Siddhar appears and gives Vibhoothi (sacred ash) to all construction workers. All the workers worried with their pay, take it to their house and keeps it. The next day, all the ashes turned into gold.  It not only turned into gold but also turned proportionately to each workers work. The fort is known as "Thiruneetran Thirumadhil". The Vibhhoothi Siddhar's Jeeva-Samadhi is in fourth praharam.

Kalamega pulavar
Long time ago, there was a severe friendship issues between Shiva Bhakthas and Vishnu Bhakthas. At that time, a severe flood came. All the people left their house and took shelter in the temple. Few Vishnu bhakthas were also in the Shiva temple. Few people gathered and cooked for people in the temple. Only few people could cook at the time. One of the Vishnu Bhakthas, offered to cook food. Seeing this, Vishnu Bhakthas made him promise that he would only be serving in Shiva temple. The person agreed and he started his service happily. The flood receded and people started going back to their lives. The cook, who couldn't go back from his promise, stayed in Shiva temple. One night when he was sleeping, goddess appeared in the form of Saraswathi, the goddess of arts. Seeing him sleeping with his mouth open, she spit the betel leaf in his mouth. The moment the cook was awake, he started singing poems and became a poet known as "kalamega pulavar".

Mazhu endhiya Pandithar
In total there are nine theerthams in the temple(Sreemath Theertham, Rama Theertham, Chandra Theertham, Agni Theertham, Indira Theertham, Akasthiya Theertham, Jambu Theertham, Surya Theertham, Brahmma Theertham). Out of this, Rama theertham has a unique story of how it came to be a part of the temple. Rama theertham is near to both Srirangam temple and Tiruvanaikaa temple. So the Pandits of both the temples claimed the theertham for their own temple. To finalise, Pandits of srirangam temple lays out a challenge. If the Pandit of Thiruvanaikaa temple wins it, the theertham will belong to Thiruvanaikaa temple else, it will belong to Srirangam temple but the challenge the Pandits of Srirangam lays is that the pandit of Thiruvanaikaa temple should carry a mazhu(a small instrument in lord Shiva's hand) out of fire, red hot, in bare hands to the temple. Hearing this, the Pandit of Thiruvanaikaa temple comes to goddess Akilandeswari and cries to her. The Goddess consoles him and tells him to accept the challenge. The pandit goes back and agrees to the challenge. The day of challenge comes and everyone are gathered. The mazhu is heated until it is red hot. It is handed to the Pandit. The worried Pandit takes it in hand. To his and everyone's surprise, the Pandit holds the mazhu with ease. The Pandit brings it to Thiruvanaikaa temple. As agreed, Srirangam Pandits agrees that Rama theertham belongs to Thiruvanaikka temple.

That's all folks. Hope you all enjoyed reading about Thiruvanaikaa!!! See you all soon with a new temple!
